Provenance: The correspondence letters were donated in 2020 by Sr Ellen Glavin, former Professor of Fine Arts at Emmanuel, and Sr. Karen Hokanson, SND, Associate Dean of Education; Chair, Department of Education.

Biography/History: Maurice Prendergast was born in St. Johns, Newfoundland in 1858. His family moved to Boston in 1868 where Maurice began to practice art with a local artist. He moved to Paris in 1891 to finish his education before returning to Boston in 1894. He and his brother both became well known for their art in the city of Boston and the US, participating in shows like the Armory show (1913) and The Eight (1908). Maurice died in New York in the year 1924, but the Prendergast Archive & Study Center at Williams College continues to showcase the talents of both brothers.

Scope and Content: Maurice and his brother Charles Prendergast were both well-known and well respected in the Boston community. The collection contains 121 letters in the collection are OCR accessible.
