Provenance: The News Features and Scrapbooks Collection was officially transferred to the Emmanuel College Archives in 2021.

Processed By: Megan Bush, Spring 2023.

Biography/History: The foundation of this collection begins in 1914, five (5) years before the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur would open Emmanuel College. On June 7th, 1923, twenty-six (26) women became the first graduates of the school and shortly thereafter the Alumnae Association was formed in order to keep graduated Emmanuel students connected. Since then, Emmanuel College has graduated more than 20,000 students.

Scope and Content: This collection, as the name suggests, contains news clippings and scrapbooks pertaining to Emmanuel College in the 20th century. Within these scrapbooks are not just photographs, but also news meetings, correspondences, and ephemera. The materials in this collection cover local news, such as wedding announcements and obituaries, as well as major historical events, such as the ratification of the 19th Amendment and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Materials concerning major events in Emmanuel history, such as college anniversaries, student protests of the 1960s, and the 1965 dedication of the Cardinal Cushing Library can also be found. Finally, the collection contains scrapbooks and photo albums produced by students during their time at Emmanuel, allowing one to see the changes -as well as similarities- in student life at Emmanuel over the past century.

Collection Arrangement: This collection is arranged into four series: 1. Emmanuel College News 2. Alumnae Association Events and Activities 3. Student Life and Activities 4. Miscellaneous
